2012 is almost over. I decided it was time for an updated self portrait. This was last year's. I think I'll try to make it a yearly project. I will call it Narcissism Through the Years. :)

One of my favorite pastimes is looking through old family photos. This one is of my mother-in-law, a clear knock-out.

Gabe posted a very moving open letter to nonvoters by our friend Ari. Read it here.

You know how when you stand at the top of a ladder leading into the lake and you know the water is freezing? You know the water is going to be freezing but your swimsuit is on. Yes, it's freezing but you've psyched yourself up and anyway, you're already there. You know the shock of the water on your bare legs and arms and back will sting, but your friend is watching and waiting for you to get in the water already. You reason with yourself that it will feel good and warm once you're swimming.

All that happens before your big toe so cautiously touches the water. Then you are paralyzed. Then all bets are off. Then it's panic and take-backs time. In that moment you believe your only two choices in life to be stay on that dock by that ladder contemplating the jump or jump.

Then, on an impulse similar to the other hundred impulses you've felt in the last few minutes that failed to land you in the water, you jump. Those thoughts in your head after you decide to jump but before you're under water? Dammit, it's too late! I will now have to feel the cold. The shock. The sting.

And it's never as bad as you imagined? Or it is exactly as bad as you imagined but you don't care because it only lasted a moment and what's as little cold water to you when you're actually swimming?

Apparently I now live in Los Angeles. I'm still a little shocked myself. But happy.

So proud of my girl Elise and the team at Imogene + Willie on their newly launched Fall Women's line. It's impeccable. I have my eyes on those imogene slim plus wash jeans and cornelia military shirt.

Sun Midnight Sun

One of the first things I learned about my husband when we started dating was his love for Sara Watkins. Up until that point I had only known her as 1/3 of Nickel Creek but Gabe soon introduced me to her other collaborations with her brother Sean and friends like Fiona Apple, Glen Phillips and Benmont Tench, just to name a few. Some of my best memories of when we were dating consist of us going to Largo in L.A. on Thursday nights to hear the Watkins Family Hour.

Sara's second solo album recently came out and it's really great. Here's her video for Take Up Your Spade. Sean, Fiona, Jackson Browne and Blake Mills (he produced the album) all make appearances in the video and throughout the album.

the art of rowing

I recently re-watched Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network” and was captivated by the paradoxical fortune and misfortune of the Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, a pair of rowers gifted with wealth and talent, and even a decent idea for a website on which Harvard students could look each other up online. And yet all of their gifts are for naught when a smirking genius enters the picture and turns their good little idea into a world-changing big idea. And why does the genius get away with it? Mostly because the twins (“the Winklevi,” as they’re affectionately called in the movie) are spending the better part of every day pursuing what they do best: rowing.

They went on to compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

(note to self: don't spread too thin. nothing great will be accomplished that way.  invest your time, energy and love into work/relationships/projects you want to see thrive.)

tennessee

I moved to Tennessee when I was eleven years old. My dad was born and raised in Texas (have you seen The Tree of Life? I felt like I was watching his home movies when I saw it) but moved to Tennessee when he was 13 or 14 and my mom was born and raised in Tennessee and lived there until she and my dad briefly moved to Alabama after they were married. My siblings and I all went to the same high school my dad and uncle attended. My mom went to school about 15 minutes away. I like to think of my parents as possibly hanging out at the sames places in high school or passing each other on the street before they met and fell in love years later.

I knew Tennessee well even before we moved there permanently because both sets of grandparents and all my aunts, uncles and cousins lived there. We would visit many times throughout the year but my favorite time to visit was always summertime. The swimming, swinging for hours outside on the swing my grandfather built and hung on a big tree in their backyard, sleeping with my sister and grandmother in her giant bed.

I hope my kids will feel the same way. They may not be born there or live there at all, but I hope they feel a connection to this special place. Hopefully they will love the fact that their momma is a southern girl and we will create memories all our own of spending summers in Tennessee.
